Guide and Tips for Kids Bedrooms

May 8th, 2011

Before choosing bedroom accessories it’s usual to start with the basic colour of the bedroom, simply a coat of paint or highlighting one wall with kids wallpaper, depending on whether you’re decorating for a boy, girl, toddler or baby and whether you choose to base the theme round one of their favourite characters or plump for one of the many generic kids themes available today.

Next is bedding and curtains to set the focal point of the room and then you can start to add a few of the main childens accessories such as lighting and bedside lamps, a child’s rug and maybe somewall stickers.

Now you’ve got the bedroom looking nice, and remember to involve your youngster in this process, it’s time to think about keeping the room tidy and choosing the type of toy storage which is best for their age. Toy boxes are a must for toddlers, whether it’s the traditional type or the useful stacking system, for older children you might plump for a fixed unit with shelves, bookcases and cupboards.

If you’re budget and creative juices are still flowing and you want to create a chill out space – especially for teenagers rooms, who need their space and somewhere to do their homework in peace - bean bagsdesks, dressing tables and TV units make the perfect bedroom accessory.

The ultimate bedroom accessory, and one which stamps a ‘look’ on their rooms, is a whole wall mural. There’s a huge selection of these with full instructions and will certainly make bedtime a whole lot easier.

100% Cotton Vs Poly Cotton Mix Vs Microfiber

March 16th, 2011

I’m sure we all would love to wrap our kids up in 100% cotton bedding, but I’m sure mums out there will agree its blooming hard to keep those creases out! Plus in these financially straining days it can be pricey; although I feel that the pros far outweigh the cons; if like me you have sensitive skin or even eczema 100% cotton lets your skin breathe throughout the night. Which is perfect for helping the little ones sleep right through and we all know that means happy mummy’s!

Then I came across Poly Cotton mix bedding which to me sounded too good to be true; not only is it cheaper than cotton sheets, it doesn’t crease like cotton – but still soft to the touch? I dug around for some more info and it seems to do exactly what it says on the tin! (I would still go for 100% cotton for those with sensitive skin)

So I move onto ‘microfiber’ duvets; once again the pros outweigh the cons. With this bedding you’ll get a lightweight, wrinkle resisting, stain stopping, and affordable alternative to fine cotton bedding. The only downsides being the sheets can sometimes feel quite stiff.

So there are no losers in the fight of the ‘bedding champions’ each have their own qualities which are good and not so good, but if you’re looking for boys bedding, or girls bedding here is the breakdown:

• 100% Cotton; great for sensitive skin and keeping you cool especially during the summer months.
• Polyester Cotton mix; Easy to manage, affordable and soft to the touch.
• Microfiber: inexpensive bedding that is ideal for kids with allergies and wrinkle hating mums!

Good Luck!

Blackout linings from Childrens rooms – not just for kids’ bedrooms

March 10th, 2011

Before Christmas I changed the curtains in my bedroom, I was very pleased with how they looked but now Spring is on the way and the mornings are lighter – don’t I know it!

It’s not so much my 3 year old daughter coming into the bedroom at daft o’clock shouting ‘wake up mummy and daddy, it’s morning time’, but the light shining through from the lovely but very light curtains.

So I’ve just put up some blackout linings that I got from Children’s Rooms (as I work there it is part of the perks to get some items a bit cheaper :-) ). It’s so easy to do and took me less than 20 minutes. The result now is a very dark room and even though I’m still going to be woken up at silly o’clock by my daughter (her blackout blind doesn’t seem to have the same affect), it won’t be due to the morning sunshine.

Also as a migraine sufferer a dark room is a blessing. I’m almost (not really though) wishing for a migraine just so I can go and lie in my bedroom with the curtains closed.
